This Student Volunteering Week we’re celebrating all the amazing things STAR groups do to help make the UK a more welcoming place for refugees and asylum seekers.

In 2023-24 STAR groups have worked with local partner organisations across the country to help deliver 27 local volunteering projects! STAR groups help run a huge range of initiatives, from English conversation clubs, First Aid training sessions and football practice to bike refurbishment schemes, donation drives and youth clubs.

Here’s what STAR volunteers have to say about taking part:

“The conversation clubs have really been going amazingly…the volunteers are very committed and the learners have provided plenty of positive feedback”.

Volunteer, Bristol STAR

“It’s so nice to have created a community where people are always happy and excited to come and learn and invite their friends”.

Conversation Club Volunteer, Glasgow STAR

“We have a huge number of enthusiastic volunteers who have been brilliant in this project”.

English Conversation Class Coordinator, Birmingham STAR

“One learner said she likes waking up on Wednesday mornings because she knows she gets to come to the class that afternoon”.

Women’s Class Coordinator, Nottingham STAR

Thank you to all STAR leaders, volunteers, partners and participants who help make these projects a success! Feeling inspired? Find your local STAR group to find out how you can get involved or check out our Instagram @student_action_for_refugees to see what STAR groups have been up to.
