Here are some tips to help you settle in and make the most of your time:
1. Embrace the Adventure:
University is a time to explore new interests, meet people from all walks of life, and discover your passions. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new!
2. Stay Organized:
With classes, assignments, and social events, staying organised is key. Keep a planner or use apps to manage your time effectively, like notion so you can balance your studies and social life.
3. Take Care of Yourself:
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement, but don’t forget to take care of your physical and mental well-being. Eat well, stay active, and make time for relaxation.
4. Look for your local STAR group:
STAR (Student Action for Refugees) is the national network of students building a more understanding and just society where refugees are welcomed and can thrive in the UK. Our student groups based in colleges and universities and a central team of experts, work together at a number of levels to bring about lasting change. We:
-Volunteer locally working directly with refugees, building understanding and connections
-Campaign nationally for policy change and equal access to higher education for refugees
-Learn about refugee protection and the asylum journey in the UK with experts and peers
5. Seek Support When You Need It:
Everyone faces challenges, and there’s no shame in asking for help. If you are studying at a University of Sanctuary, there will be a dedicated staff member who is there to help you. If your university is not a University of Sanctuary, your wellbeing team and tutor should both be able to refer you to get the support you need, depending on what your situation is. Sanctuary team here to support you with anything you need—from academic guidance to mental health resources. Unfortunately, many students miss out on the full range of support available. Don’t wait until you’re in a very bad situation before reaching out for help, or even a confidential conversation.
6. Overcoming Language Barriers:
We understand that for many students, English language skills and becoming familiar with academic English can be a significant barrier. To help you feel more confident and prepared, we’ve compiled a list of online courses designed to improve your language skills:

All universities have staff there specifically to support students and ensure you are safe and well while studying there. There are a number of departments, whose names may differ depending on your university, but here are the main ones. You can find more about them from your tutor, welcome pack from the university, and via the website. Here are some of the main ones:

- Widening Participation/sanctuary teams: there to provide tailored support for students who have claimed asylum or been granted refugee status in the UK, as well as other underrepresented groups on campus.
