This week is Volunteers Week, a week dedicated to celebrating the hard work and dedication of volunteers who give their time and solidarity to support causes close to their heart. The second day of volunteers week was also Power of Youth Day!
This day is all about the positive contributions young people make to their communities and recognising the power and importance of the voices of the younger generations. The STAR network and Equal Access work would not be possible without the hard work from STAR volunteers and Equal Access Activists. This Volunteers Week and Power of Youth Day – and every other day – we are celebrating all STAR volunteers and saying thank you for all the work that you do in creating a welcoming and fair society for refugees and people seeking asylum in your community and across the UK.
Today we are sharing some of the stories and achievements from STARs and celebrating the impact that you have everyday, making your voices heard in your community and across the UK. Read their stories below.

Angela Griffith – Cardiff STAR
It’s been a really great couple of weeks for Cardiff STAR. I’m very grateful to volunteer alongside such a lovely, kind, thoughtful and dedicated committee. Last week, we put together our biggest fundraiser, Refugee Rhythms, a live music festival at Porters Cardiff (thank you Porters + thank you to the wonderful bands!) featuring a delicious buffet of food generously donated by local restaurants & stalls!
Elisa Peller – Exeter STAR
By running regular volunteering initiatives, the STAR Society has had a positive and meaningful impact on the refugee community within both the student and wider Exeter communities. Through their considerable number of collaborations with other societies and fundraising efforts, STAR has gone above and beyond to expand their community networks and spread awareness of the issues faced by refugees.?

Sam Pordale – Warwick STAR
We were honoured to be named “Changemakers of the Year” by The Big Issue, and have successfully established new partnerships with both local and national charities. Through this, STAR has become the main voice for advocating for Warwick Sanctuary Students, creating a platform to represent and amplify their voices on campus. Advocating for the wellbeing of our sanctuary peers has become one of STAR’s core commitments.
